4 Week Plan for the Perfect Faux Tan

20140327-113426.jpg

You’ve got the dress, the date and the dance moves all planned out, but what about the perfect prom accessory–a healthy, sun-kissed complexion? Every smokey eye and flirty updo looks better with a slightly golden skin tone. Follow my guide and your glow will look flawless, not faux.

4 Weeks Before Prom
Start looking after your skin by exfoliating regularly to remove dead, dry skin cells and using a body brush to improve circulation. Don’t forget to to moisturize before bed–while you sleep your body is in rejuvenation mode so moisturizing before bed will have a more powerful impact on the skins hydration levels. The better condition your skin is in the better your tan will look and last! Product Picks: Use St. Tropez Body Polish (or make your own!) every couple of days in the shower and St. Tropez Body Moisturizer every day before bed.

3 Weeks Before Prom
Self-tan your body from tip to toe! I recommend the award-winning St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse. It applies easily and streak-free with their applicator mitt and can be followed up by St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Spray on your face, back and hard to reach areas.

2 Weeks Before Prom
Now is when you might want to start using a gradual self-tanner so your skin has a slight base before the big glow. Try Jergens BB Body Perfecting Skin Cream to hydrate, illuminate, firm and even out your skin tone.

1 Week Before Prom
If you have any waxing to do, now is the time to do so. If you wax or shave after the tan, it will lift the tan, leave streaks or both. You want to go with the hair removal method that lasts the longest–waxing. If you plan to keep your tan for a week or more you’ll end up with stubble if you’ve shaved. If you want to reduce any pain that can stem from waxing try Completely Bare’s Numbing and Cooling Spray to numb and sooth the skin pre and post wax.

2 Days Before Prom
Apply a layer of self-tanner from tip to toe. I suggest applying it in the evening so that you can relax afterwards without disrupting the development of the self-tan. A self-tanner will always work best if its allowed to develop overnight; your body temperature will heat up and pores will open up allowing the self-tan to really get into the skin and develop to its full potential.

The Day Before Prom
Check your body over and see if there are any areas you may wish to deepen. If your legs are going to be on display, you might want to apply another layer of self-tanner or gradual tanner to give the skin an extra boost, and to create and define muscle tone. Simply spray 6 inches away from the skin and sweep around the contours and curves of the body. Spray under the inner arm and top of the arm, shoulders and in between cleavage, sides of the stomach, underneath your bottom, sides of the thighs and along the shins to really contour your entire body.

The Big Day
Once your dress is on and hair and makeup complete, you will need to add one last final touch to the exposed skin. St. Tropez Luxe Dry Oil is a fantastic skin finishing product! Its a dry oil, so it won’t be greasy and won’t get onto your clothes. The oil is formulated with Brazil Nut for deep moisturization and has a subtle mica instant shimmer that will make you party ready. Simply shake the bottle to disperse the mica and apply the dry oil onto an applicator mitt and smooth over key focal areas of your exposed limbs. Your skin will look radiant and fresh with a subtle shimmer. Now you’re ready for #selfies!

Did you attend your Prom? What was your favourite part about getting ready? Or your favourite memory? Do you still have your dress? Let’s chat in the comments!

Beauty Benefits of Epsom Salts

20140307-220219.jpg
The wonders of Epsom salt have been well known for hundreds of years. Unlike other salts, Epsom has beneficial properties that can soothe the body, mind and soul. Some of the countless health benefits include; relaxing the nervous system, soothing back pain, cramps and aching limbs, and drawing toxins from the body.

One of the simplest ways to ease stress and stress related problems is to soak in a hot tub with a cup or two of Epsom salts. The benefits don’t stop there, Epsom salts also have un-ending beauty uses including:

Exfoliate Dead Skin: In the shower or bath, mix a handful of Epsom salt with a tablespoon of bath or olive oil and rub all over your wet skin to exfoliate and soften skin. Rinse thoroughly. To clean your face and exfoliate at the same time, mix half a teaspoon of Epsom with your regular cleansing cream. Gently massage into skin and rinse with cold water.

Dislodge Blackheads: Add a teaspoon of Epsom salt and 3 drops of iodine into a half cup of boiling water. Apply this mixture to the blackheads with a cotton ball.

Volumizing Hair Mask: Combine equal parts of conditioner and epsom salt and leave on hair for 20 minutes. Rinse well and let air dry for thicker hair.

Foot Soak: Soothe aches, remove odors and soften rough, cracked skin with a foot soak. Add 1/2 cup of Epsom salt to a large pan of warm water. Add fresh lavender, peppermint or your preferred essential oil. Soak feet for as long as it feels right. Rinse and dry.

Homemade Face Mask: For normal to oily skin: mix 1 tablespoon of cognac, 1 egg, 1/4 cup of non-fat dry milk, the juice of 1 lemon, and a half-teaspoon of epsom salt. For normal to dry skin: mix 1/4 cup of grated carrot, 1 1/2 teaspoons of mayonnaise and a half-teaspoon of epsom salt. Apply both masks to damp skin. Leave for 15-20minutes and rinse off.

Are Epsom Salts already a staple in your cupboard? How do you use them? Share your secrets and recipes in the comments!

The 7 Rules of Makeup Organization

makeup storage

Hi Beauties!
If you’re like me, you have way more makeup and beauty products than you really need, and how do you find that specific lipgloss or mascara in such a chaotic girly mess? The key is organization, and after years of arranging and re-arranging my kits I’ve broken it down into 7 simple steps;

1. Pick Drawers over Countertops
Store your makeup in drawers to keep it out of direct sunlight and away from life’s inevitable little messes. This will keep your counter space decluttered and preserve your favorite products.

2. Clean Out and Organize
There’s no use in organizing expired makeup, so sort everything into 2 piles: a save pile and a toss pile. Since there’s also no use in holding onto something you never wear, if you cant remember the last time you used it, into the toss pile it goes. The save pile gets sorted into as many categories as you need, I recommend these 8: Eyeshadow; Eyeliner, eye pencils & brow pencils; Mascara; Primer + foundation; Concealer; Powder, blush + bronzer; Lipstick; Lipgloss and lip liner. Feeling the urge to organize further? Split up the contents of each category by formula: liquid, cream and powder.

3. Save Space with Stackable Containers
Each product should have its own compartment. Pick trays and boxes that fit together and stack easily, bonus points if the container is clear. You can find clear plastic organizers at any home improvement or beauty supply store. If you prefer the look of wooden or lacquered plastic containers, label your trays so you know exactly what is inside.

4. Separate What You Use Regularly
Store your containers in order of what gets the most use. If you don’t wear eyeshadow on a daily basis, don’t stack that tray on top. Pull out the products you use everyday and make the top tray your “everyday face”. That way your foundation, mascara, or whatever your essentials may be, will be easily accessible.

5. Store It So You Can See It
The only problem with staring into a sea of lipsticks is finding the shade you’re looking for. Store lipstick upside down so you can read the color name on the bottom. The same principle applies towards powders, shadows and compacts. If the top is clear, store them right side up. If not, flip them over so you can see the label. Avoid stacking individual products on top of each other so you won’t have to dig for the shade you want.

6. Sort Your Brushes
Brushes get divided into 2 categories: face and eyes. Keeping them separate will save you from losing your eyeliner brush in the bristles of your fluffiest powder brushes. Store them standing upright in a jar, fill the bottom of the jars with coffee beans, pebbles or marbles so that the brush heads won’t touch each other.

7. Edit Often
Every 6 months or so, go through and edit out expired products and makeup you haven’t used since your last edit. Once a month, go through your trays and tidy up and re-organize those eyeshadows that have made their way into your blush tray. Your monthly sweep is also the perfect time to clean your makeup brushes & tools!

The Liebster Award (x4!)

A big hug and heartfelt thank you to the lovely Christina from A Casual Beauty for this recognition, and to Bethy Beauty, Must Love Nails and OrchidΒ who allΒ  nominated me as I was finishing up this post! I’ve fallen in love with blogging and putting together photos and posts, and it makes me warm and fuzzy to know that other people enjoy reading them! So thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to all of you!

20140302-141328.jpgThe Leibster Award is one which is awarded to bloggers with less then 200 followers. After receiving it you then list 11 facts about yourself, answer 11 questions, select 11 nominees, and provide 11 questions for them to answer. All in all, a great way to share some love.

Rules:

  • Link back to the person who nominated you
  • State 11 facts about yourself and answer the 11 questions provided
  • Pick 11 nominees for the award and let them know they’ve been chosen (You cannot nominate the person who nominated you)
  • Create a set of 11 questions for the nominees to answer

Alright, let’s get to it. Here is 11 facts about myself.
1. I have an unusual attachment to England and almost all things British. I truly believe that England is my “spirit place” and that I was meant to be born there. I’ll visit someday.
2. I’m also convinced that I was born in the wrong decade. The 1950s are fascinating to me and I wish I could’ve witnessed and experienced them in all their glory.
3. I’m an only child.
4. My favourite animals are peacocks and owls.
5. My favourite colour is purple and I loooove leopard print.
6. I hate filing my nails, the sound and feeling of something gritty rubbing against my nails makes memandrew shutter.
7. I practice yoga daily and am currently working on my arm balances.
8. Winged liner, Ardelle #120 lashes and red lips are my go-to makeup look.
9. About 90% of the TV I watch is the Space/ScFy channel. (Further proving how much of a nerd I am haha)
10. I love food. Like, LOVE it. I’ll try almost anything and once I find something I really like I’ll obsess/only eat that for a few weeks. Currently loving garlic naan bread with cream cheese, hummus, and whatever other dip or spread I can get my hands on.
11. As they say, you save the best for last. I knew I had found the one before The Boy and I even went on our first date. He is the most wonderful person to walk into my life at the most unexpected time and he truly makes me a better person. I really am a lucky girl to have such a supportive partner at my side.

As I was lucky enough to be nominated by four separate blogs, they all posted 11 questions to be answered. But in order to keep this post somewhat short I will only be answering the questions posted by my first nomination, Christina.
1. Where is your perfect vacation?
Hmm, this is a hard one because there are plenty of places I’d love to visit and I haven’t done much traveling in my life. England is an absolute must-visit for me but I’d also LOVE to see New Zealand (so beautiful!) and Scandinavia.

2. What kind of pets do you have?
My hubby and I have 4 cats, all of which are truly our fur babies. My parents have a 3 year old golden retriever who was born on my birthday and I totally consider him to be my own as well.

3. What is your least favourite food?
Tofu, so gross.t

4. What is your favourite beverage?
Tea! Specifically earl grey and wild orange blossom from Teavana.

5. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I’ve always been indecisive so of course I changed my mind every year, but I was really into literature and writing so I always figured I’d be an English teacher/professor or some sort of journalist.

6. If you could meet any fictional character, who would it be?
I love this question! A tricky one as I get quite attached to characters from novels and TV shows. At the top of my list would be Rose and the Tenth Doctor from Doctor Who, Marshall and Lily from How I Met Your Mother, the gang from The Big Bang Theory, Astrid from White Oleander, and Josie from Paint it Black.

7. Which of the four seasons do you prefer?
Autumn is by far my favourite. There’s just something about crisp fall air, pumpkin spice lattes, cozy sweaters and cute boots that can’t compare to the other seasons. Spring is a close second, the warm weather and new life is so refreshing!

8. If you could learn a new hobby, what would it be?
Ooh, that’s a good one. I’ve been considering going back to school for hairdressing to add to my services, although I’m not sure that’s a “hobby.”

9. What do you like to do in your free time?geek
Me and the hubz are both pretty big nerds so we spend a lot of time playing games together like Magic: The Gathering and Settlers of Catan. Im also into crafting and making natural beauty products that I sell in my Etsy shop, or spending some quiet time reading and practicing yoga.

10. If you could stay a certain age forever, which age would you pick?
Another tough one. I’m currently in my early twenties and I can certainly see why this is the decade everyone looks back on, but I’m also ready for the stability and progress that your 30s brings. I guess I’d have to meet somewhere in the middle and say maybe 28-32? You’re still young and full of ambitions, but you’re mature enough to know what you want from life and have some sort of stability.

11. What inspired or what is the meaning behind your blog name?
My blog name is the same as my makeup artistry business. I wanted to keep it the same to avoid confusion and make it easy for potential clients to find me. The name Lux Makeup Artistry is a combination of a few characters from some of my favourite shows and books, and (IMO) sounds elegant and sophisticated, everything I wish to convey through my business.

The lovely blogs I have nominated are:

And their 11 questions:
1. Why did you start your blog?
2. What is your go-to makeup look?
3. Who is your celebrity style crush?
4. Who/What keeps you inspired?
5. Who are some of your favourite makeup artists and beauty gurus?
6. What is a fashion or beauty trend you hope doesn’t stick around?
7. Two-parter! What was your first makeup/beauty product as a child? What was your first “real” makeup/beauty product as a teenager?
8. What’s your fave way to spend a day/night with your best girls?
9. What is your signature look or scent? (Rose perfume, red lipstick, sleek style)
10. Have you ever had a fashion, hair or makeup mishap? What happened and how did you deal with it?
11. What is an unexpected act of kindness someone has done for you?

A final thank you to the FOUR lovely ladies and blogs who have nominated me for this super sweet award. I appreciate every single follow, like and comment I receive on here and I hope I share the love with you as well.
